Life as a Vagabond

Love, love, love

Posted on February 16, 2010 at 8:51 AM

Just past Valentine's Day and I'm ruminating about love. Love of one's spouse and family for sure. Love of one's business and what I'm doing is another. There's times in both areas when the only thing you've got to keep you going is faith and love. Why am I sitting in a booth every weekend, frequently without enough sales to justify doing this as a business? Why do it when I could get a full-time job that pays more? It's not like I have all the time in the world for this, I've got more than enough to look after.

Is this dream a valid one? Is it still my passion?

Wish I could say yes, and yes, wholeheartedly but I'm in one of those troughs that comes along in every relationship where you question whether you're getting enough out of the other person, in this case, my dear business. It's not so much a business as a mad love affair. I give and give to it, remains to be seen what will happen...

In the meantime, I've started a part-time job, where I'm paginating newspapers in Woodstock. This is Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 4pm to midnight. I like it well enough. I know what to do, the people are nice, and I'm left alone to do my job (!) with just the right amount of guidance and help.

Problem is Dave has decided the Market will be open Thursdays as well, starting in March. Who can I get to look after my booth as it'll be a long day in hell if I have to be there all day and then go to my job in the evening.

I've been doing a lot of ads for the Market. New ones for LFP, the Pennysaver, and Daytripper. I did a business card for Wilma, and a prototype logo for the Market, which Dave would like me to improve on. We hit upon the idea of a drawing of the Confederation building for the logo. I took pictures of the building and will do some sketches simplifying it. Also have to revamp the website soon.

There's a lot of free graphics work I'm doing for the Market and I'll have to discuss payback with Dave for the future in terms of getting a double booth. With the Market opening two days soon, a few vendors might leave and there'll be another shakeup in space.

Am I ready to expand and put even more money into inventory and fixtures? Too many questions. Wish I knew what's going to happen.
